What Gloria Steinem Had to Say About Kim Kardashian's Pregnancy Body

Whatever your personal feelings about Kim Kardashian, you've got to agree that she gets a truckload of criticism. And these days, the often less-than-kind words are aimed at the reality star's burgeoning pregnancy belly: How big it is, how she chooses to dress it, and the general size and shape of the rest of her.
But other celebrities are fighting back on her behalf. Today, Gloria Steinem—feminist, journalist, political activist—made her thoughts on the topic as clear as day:
"Our bodies are never public property under any circumstance.... It's wrong, and people in the street who feel the right to touch a pregnant woman's belly ought to be arrested for harassment. Our bodies belong to us, and if we don't invite touching, we shouldn't tolerate it."
Steinem isn't the only one springing to Kim's defense. Gwyneth Paltrow said: "I think that women should support each other, especially through pregnancy; it's a difficult time, and I think Kim Kardashian looks absolutely beautiful."
Meanwhile, Helena Christensen wrote: "It is disgusting and despicable the way that certain media constantly harass the pregnant Kim Kardashian.... It's enough that they persistently project a negative focus on women's physical shapes, but a public bullying and attacking of a pregnant woman because of her growing shape is just lower than low." And Jenna Dewan-Tatum said: "Let's all be kind to every woman out there who is expecting.... It shouldn't be about how much weight someone has gained, their fashion, etc....it's a beautiful amazing moment in time and not about vanity."
I'm siding with the stars on this one. Pregnancy is different for every woman—and you just never know how your body might react when it happens. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I gained 35 pounds, and I swear it was all in my ankles and my eyelids—I mean, c'mon, like I could've controlled that.
And besides, why does it matter to the world how—or where—pregnant women gain weight? It's bad enough that postpartum mamas are practically required to lose every pound within a few weeks of giving birth (seriously, guys, you wouldn't believe how many pitches I get about "how to lose pregnancy weight like the stars"). It's just unnecessary, kind of ridiculous criticism—no matter who you are.
